Last year, Microsoft purchased the social technology Yammer and included it in SharePoint. Microsoft is also working hard to create tight integration between SharePoint, Yammer and Office 365, the vendor's cloud-based version of Office. While some industry observers have commended the purchase for being a real step up for SharePoint's social networking capabilities, others are skeptical that the duo can really compete with collaboration software alternatives, such as Jive.
But the question of whether Yammer is the right collaboration tool for your company depends on a few factors, including how much you want to customize it.
With the Yammer acquisition, Microsoft "may have tripped over themselves," said Scott Robinson, a SharePoint and BI expert. "It limits how flexible social media can be."
